My dad had a kidney stone and was crying in pain. He never cries! Is there something I can do so I never have one? Are they genetic?

Thanks for your questions. Kidney stones are small stones that form in your kidneys. People with kidney stones may have the following symptoms:

  • Pain in their abdomen (belly) or side
  • Blood in their urine
  • Pain when they pee
  • Nausea or vomiting
  •  Genetics – whether other people in your family have had a kidney stone
  • Hydration – drinking water regularly can lower your risk
  • Diet – eating a healthy diet with a variety of different food groups can lower your risk
  • Medical problems – some medical problems increase your risk
  • Supplements/medications – some supplements/medicines can increase your risk
