Just the thought of coffee makes you awake

On the effect of coffee on our body, a lot is already known. The psychological effects have been well studied, researchers at the University of Toronto, closer and found that even the sight of coffee can lead us to be more alert and attentive.

Alone at the thought of coffee, our brain is stimulated, and the attention increases, reports Prof. Sam Maglio and his colleagues in the journal Consciousness and Cognition. Participants, the thought of the caffeinated drink, also felt the time as entertaining, and were able to think in a more concrete and clear – without actually drinking coffee.

In the case of people from Eastern cultures, this effect was less pronounced. Maglio speculated that the connection between the coffee and the attention is in less of a coffee-dominated cultures, so strong: "In North America, we have the image of the leadership that goes with a triple Espresso in Hand, to an important meeting. There is a connection between the consumption of caffeine and be awake that do not exist in other cultures."

The scientists have studied in four different studies, with participants from Western and Eastern cultures, the psychological effects of References to coffee and tea. Certain areas of the brain are activated when the attention is on the rise. This can be triggered, for example, by emotions, chemical messengers of the brain, or caffeinated beverages. Maglio plans to investigate the psychological effects of other foods and beverages and to check up, whether the Think about Energy Drinks or red wine also has certain effects on us.
