Like food waste and Obesity contribute to global warming
The intergovernmental panel on climate change IPCC released on Thursday a special report to the question of how the diet of a rapidly growing world population, the impact on the climate. The Report shows a world in which billions of people every day throw away food or waste, while hundreds of millions starve. The most important findings at a Glance:
A third of all food is for the ton of
According to the report, to be used annually by between 25 and 30 per cent of all produced food is wasted or thrown away. Since 1970 this share has risen by around 40 percent. According to the UN food and agriculture organization (FAO) is the cost of this loss each year, nearly a trillion dollars (890 billion euros).
And also the climate of suffering: The waste contributes around eight percent to the already poor CO2 balance. This is also due to the increasing use of monocultures such as soybeans, contribute significantly to the destruction of the forests. Each year, tropical forests the size of Sri Lanka and with them the ability to absorb large amounts of climate – damaging carbon-dioxide disappearing.
Rich, industrialized countries waste the most
Not everywhere, the food waste takes on the same proportions: The IPCC report also deals with the Differences between rich and developing countries. Therefore, people in rich countries throw a total of 222 million tons of food in the garbage per year. This is roughly the amount produced in all of sub-Saharan countries annually.
The potatoes look slightly shriveled, might have already sprouted, or even green Make? Cut the simple generous, then the consumption is still possible. The potato is shriveled, you turn it into mashed potatoes or soup. Boiled potatoes are left from the day before left, are perfect for baked potatoes.
People in Europe and North America are wasting, on average, per capita, 95 to 115 kilograms of food a year. In the African sub-Saharan countries and in Asia there are on average only six to eleven kilograms per head.
Wastage happens for different reasons
Also, the type of waste depends heavily on the level of development of a country. In industrial Nations, food thrown away to 40 percent of retailers or consumers. In developing countries, 40 percent of food is thrown away after the harvest in the trash.
“In the South has a lot to do with the difficulties of transportation, and the preservation of food, the food will be produced in small villages and don’t make it often in good condition to the market”, says Teresa Anderson of the non-governmental organisation ActionAid. “In the North of the waste occurs much more frequently in the super markets. The markets themselves are throwing away vegetables because of the shape or size, or because it doesn’t look beautiful enough”, writes Anderson.
Obesity means a waste of
Approximately two billion people worldwide are overweight or obese, while elsewhere millions of people are suffering from Hunger. The report of the IPCC, according to the “consumer beyond what they need to survive” can be considered as a waste. This Form of waste have at least an equally large extent as the Throw away of food, – is spoken in the draft of the IPCC report.
